A conductive loss with a chronically draining ear

Vignette

An adult with long-standing chronic otitis media has a persistently discharging ear and cannot tolerate an earmould or dome in the canal. Bone-conduction thresholds are near normal; air-conduction shows a moderate conductive loss.

Test findings

A significant air–bone gap (conductive loss) with a healthy cochlea, in an ear that cannot be occluded.
